A coach carrying more than 50 German grade 12 students and four teachers collided with a delivery van on the A28 near Wezep in the eastern Netherlands at about 04:20 local time (02:20 GMT), Dutch police said, leaving 16 people injured and the coach overturned.

Police in the Gelderland region reported that eight people, including the van driver, were seriously hurt and the others sustained minor injuries; all were taken to hospital. The cause of the crash is under investigation and it was not immediately clear how many of the injured were students.

The students were travelling from the northern German town of Schönberg to Paris, the school said, and belonged to two grade 12 classes typically aged 17 to 18. The school added there were no reports of life-threatening injuries and that those affected were receiving comprehensive medical care.
