Despots eventually become servants of their own servants. This is how such systems survive. The pressure exerted by loyal followers comes to dominate the despots themselves. That is how corruption endures. Those involved become bound together in a compulsory relationship between servant and master. Status makes no difference. The flatterer depends on the master, and the master depends equally on the flatterer.”
