Antonelli overtakes Hamilton to claim a thrilling British GP Sprint win at Silverstone, showcasing precise racecraft and decisive pace.
What happened, where, who announced it, when and the main outcome: Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli passed Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone to win the British Grand Prix sprint on 3 July, the result extending his championship lead to 43 points over George Russell, officials and team statements confirmed after the race.
Antonelli made his decisive move on lap eight down the Hangar Straight after conserving battery charge and using his overtake deployment, drawing alongside and passing Hamilton before Stowe.
Hamilton said he had pushed hard but was unable to prevent Antonelli’s straight-line pass, citing a strong headwind on the back straight and depleted deployable energy late in the sprint.
Behind the leaders, Lando Norris climbed from sixth to third on the opening lap and briefly traded positions with Antonelli before settling in third place after a series of battles with George Russell and Max Verstappen.
Russell started strongly, moving to third on lap one with two overtakes, but lost places on the following laps and ultimately finished fourth, describing P3 as where he probably should have ended up.
Max Verstappen fell back during the race but recovered to hold off Oscar Piastri and finish sixth, while Charles Leclerc passed Verstappen on lap ten to claim fifth.
Oscar Piastri completed the order behind Verstappen and Liam Lawson defended the final points position from Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar in the closing laps.
The top eight following the sprint were: 1. Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), 2. Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari), 3. Lando Norris (McLaren), 4. George Russell (Mercedes), 5. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), 6. Max Verstappen (Red Bull), 7. Oscar Piastri (McLaren), 8. Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls).
