Besiktas suffered a 3-2 defeat against Celtic in their UEFA Europa League Matchday 4 fixture. Goals from Olaitan and Orkun Kökçü were not enough.
Besiktas were beaten 3-2 by Scottish side Celtic in their UEFA Europa League Matchday 4 encounter at Celtic Park. Despite taking the lead and twice fighting back to level the score, the Turkish visitors conceded a late goal and left Glasgow without a point.
The first half ended goalless, with both sides struggling to find the breakthrough. Besiktas came close in the 30th minute when Leandro Trossard received a pass from Junior Olaitan and fired from just outside the penalty area. His effort struck the goalkeeper and then the post before going out of play. The referee subsequently ruled the move offside.
Besiktas made an aggressive start to the second half and were awarded a penalty in the 52nd minute. Poku was brought down by Lotomba inside the box after breaking in from the left, prompting referee Sascha Stegemann to point to the spot.
Junior Olaitan stepped up two minutes later. Although goalkeeper Johnstone saved his initial effort, the Besiktas forward reacted quickly to the rebound and put the ball into the net to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
Celtic restored parity in the 62nd minute. After Agbadou lost possession, McGregor collected the ball and played it to Osmand, who finished with a low shot from just outside the penalty arc to make it 1-1.
The hosts moved ahead in the 78th minute. Osmand sent a pass behind the Besiktas defence, allowing Camilo Duran to collect the ball on the left side of the penalty area and beat the goalkeeper with his finish.
Besiktas refused to give up and levelled the score again in the 85th minute. Poku laid the ball off from the left, and Orkun Kökçü unleashed a powerful long-range strike to make it 2-2.
However, Celtic delivered the decisive blow just two minutes later. Following Kieran Tierney’s shot from outside the penalty area, Camilo Duran controlled the ball in front of goal and found the net for his second goal of the night, sealing a 3-2 victory for the Scottish side.
Junior Olaitan scored in the 54th minute and Orkun Kökçü added Besiktas’ second in the 85th. Celtic’s goals came from Osmand in the 62nd minute and Camilo Duran in the 78th and 87th minutes.
