What happened: Jarell Quansah is set to start at right-back for England against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, manager Thomas Tuchel announced on Monday ahead of the World Cup last-16 tie, with the main outcome being changes to the starting XI.

Where and when: The match takes place in Mexico City on Monday, kicking off at 01:00 BST and will be broadcast live on BBC One and iPlayer.

Who confirmed it: The selection details and injury updates were provided by England coach Thomas Tuchel and reported by BBC Sport and correspondents on site.

Tuchel is expected to bring in wingers Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon in place of Noni Madueke and Marcus Rashford. Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Quansah, 23, will start ahead of Djed Spence, who reported a muscle niggle on Sunday morning.

BBC Sport expects the England starting XI to be: Jordan Pickford; Jarell Quansah, Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, Nico O’Reilly; Declan Rice, Elliot Anderson; Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham, Anthony Gordon; Harry Kane.

Quansah is available after returning to full training following an ankle injury sustained in the group-stage win over Panama. He has five England caps, one from the 2-0 group-stage win over Panama, and was on Liverpool’s books from age five until 22 before joining Bayer Leverkusen for £35m last summer.

Reece James missed the past two matches with a hamstring problem suffered late against Ghana and has not fully trained with the squad. The Football Association said James has been following an individual programme away from team sessions, and Tuchel indicated a late assessment would determine if James could occupy a place on the bench.

Declan Rice finished the DR Congo match at right-back and, despite carrying a hamstring issue, is expected to be fit to start against Mexico. Newcastle’s Tino Livramento left the squad before the tournament with a calf injury, and Tuchel called up Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah rather than a specialist right-back replacement such as Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Quansah usually plays as a centre-back for Bayer Leverkusen and has featured 44 times for the German club, scoring five goals. He previously made 58 appearances for Liverpool, winning the Premier League and Carabao Cup, and had a loan spell at Bristol Rovers.

The squad news leaves England preparing for a knockout encounter at high altitude in Mexico City, with selection and late fitness checks likely to determine bench options and tactical adjustments before kick-off.
