What happened, where, who announced it, when and the main outcome: Real Madrid have signed Netherlands full-back Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan on a four-year deal, with the move reported after the Spanish club activated the player’s €20m release clause; the transfer was announced as part of Real’s summer signings ahead of the new season.

Dumfries joins Real Madrid from Inter Milan, where he played since 2021 and made 207 appearances for the Nerazzurri. He scored 27 goals and provided 28 assists during his time in Italy.

The 30-year-old right-sided defender helped Inter win Serie A twice and the Coppa Italia three times. His experience is expected to strengthen Real’s defensive options after a trophyless previous season.

Real Madrid’s president Florentino Pérez, during his re-election campaign, pledged to reinforce the defence, and the club have already signed Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva and Ibrahima Konaté this summer.

The signing adds competition at right back, where England international Trent Alexander-Arnold is currently established. Dumfries’ arrival provides Real with an experienced alternative on the right flank.

Dumfries also featured for the Netherlands at the recent World Cup, helping his national team reach the last 32. His international experience complements his club achievements.

The transfer fee was reported as the activation of a €20m release clause (approximately £17.1m). Real have secured Dumfries on a four-year contract, joining a reshaped squad under the club’s new managerial appointment of José Mourinho for a second spell.
