Mexico supporters disrupted England’s hotel in Mexico City ahead of their World Cup last-16 clash, prompting security concerns and swift managerial response.
Mexico supporters attempted to disturb England’s team with music and fireworks outside their hotel in Mexico City the night before the World Cup last-16 tie, police and England sources said on Saturday, with officials moving the fans back and saying the disruption had limited effect on the squad.
Footage on social media showed fans chanting, playing music and letting off fireworks on a street near the England team hotel. Police in riot gear lined the streets immediately surrounding the building and moved people away when they tried to approach.
The heightened security followed a noise complaint lodged by Ecuador with FIFA after Ecuador’s sleep was disrupted last week by fans using loudspeakers, motorbikes and horns, officials said. England travel to Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium to play Mexico on Sunday evening local time.
England left their hotel for training on Saturday under enhanced security and were met with a mix of cheers and jeers from supporters, team sources reported. Early indications from the England camp suggested the disturbance had minimal impact on players’ preparation.
England manager Thomas Tuchel commented that treatment in Mexico had been “nicer” than he expected and described home fans as “friendly and respectful,” downplaying concerns about the team’s security and wellbeing ahead of the match.
Broadcasters list the game as Mexico v England on Monday 6 July at 01:00 BST, with coverage available on iPlayer, BBC One, BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds, and live updates on the BBC Sport website and app.
