Expert last-16 World Cup predictions: Sutton and AI analyze contenders for a MetLife final, blending insight and data-driven forecasts.
What happened? BBC Sport’s Chris Sutton and an AI predictor published forecasts for the World Cup last-16 ties, outlining likely winners and scorelines for matches across US venues.
Where and when? Predictions cover fixtures at MetLife Stadium near New York City (the final scheduled for 19 July) and the last-16 games staged in Houston, Philadelphia, New York, Mexico City, Dallas, Seattle, Atlanta and Vancouver between 4 and 7 July.
Who announced? The forecasts come from BBC Sport journalist Chris Sutton and an AI tool (Microsoft Copilot Chat) asked to predict the last-16 results.
Key outcome: Sutton and AI provided differing scorelines for most ties, with Sutton generally more optimistic about certain underdogs and AI favouring higher-scoring outcomes.
Chris Sutton reviewed each tie, offering context on team form, key players and match conditions. He predicted Morocco to beat Canada 2-0 in Houston and saw France comfortably overcoming Paraguay 5-0 in Philadelphia. Sutton highlighted Paraguay’s earlier surprise over Germany but judged a victory over France unlikely.
Sutton anticipated a dramatic Brazil–Norway encounter in New York, forecasting a 2-2 draw and a Norway win on penalties, noting Brazil’s tactical adaptability under Carlo Ancelotti and Norway’s threat through Erling Haaland. AI, by contrast, preferred a 4-2 win for Brazil.
For Mexico v England in Mexico City, both Sutton and the AI predicted a 2-1 win for England, with Sutton commenting on England’s acclimatisation and Mexico’s strong home record. In Dallas, Sutton favoured Spain over Portugal 3-1, criticising Cristiano Ronaldo’s impact on Portugal, while AI predicted a closer 2-1 score.
Other matches and forecasts include USA v Belgium in Seattle (Sutton 2-1, AI 1-2), Argentina v Egypt in Atlanta (Sutton 3-0, AI 2-0), and Switzerland v Colombia in Vancouver (Sutton 3-2 after extra time, AI 1-1 then Switzerland on penalties).
The BBC noted that Sutton correctly predicted 13 of 16 earlier fixtures while AI had 12 of 16; reader predictions had performed strongly, with users leading on cumulative correct picks. The AI predictions were generated by asking Microsoft Copilot Chat to forecast the last-16 results, and the BBC invited readers to participate in its World Cup predictor game.
Each forecast included brief reasoning: tactical observations, recent match form, key player matchups, and potential effects of venue conditions such as altitude in Mexico City. Sutton also referenced live coverage duties and commentary colleagues when explaining assessments.
The combined set of predictions provides an overview of expected outcomes and potential upsets as the tournament moves toward the MetLife Stadium final on 19 July.
