The MP for Whitehaven and Workington, Josh MacAlister, asked local residents to complete a survey about a potential passenger ferry connecting Whitehaven and the Isle of Man after an operator with a 12-seat vessel expressed interest.

MacAlister said the operator could offer fast, direct sailings suitable for day trips, short breaks and major events on the Isle of Man, and he wants to understand whether there is sufficient demand to progress the proposal.

He requested residents’ views on whether they would use the service, the types of journeys needed and reasonable ticket prices. Currently the nearest port with a ferry to the Isle of Man is Heysham in Lancashire.

MacAlister previously described an ambition to make Whitehaven “the Whitby of the west,” noting similarities such as being about an hour from the motorway and close to a national park, and said attracting some Lake District visitors to west Cumbria would be positive.
