UK estimates nearly 2,900 heat-related deaths after May–June heatwaves

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said an estimated 2,877 heat-related deaths occurred during the May and June heatwaves, with 753 deaths linked to 24–27 May and 2,124 linked to 21–28 June, and definitive figures expected in early 2027.

Both heat spells set Met Office monthly temperature records, including 31.5C at Kew Gardens on 26 May and 38.0C at Lingwood, Norfolk on 26 June. The current record for heat-related deaths was 2,985 in 2022.
