President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that he is immediately banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, saying the outlets “constantly write or report fiction or lies” about his administration without citing specific examples.

The announcement did not explain operational details, and Trump later described it as a “very simple ban.” He acknowledged legal challenges could follow and said the move stemmed from “cumulative stories over the last few years.”

Reporters from Politico and CNN remained on White House grounds after the post, and a CNN crew was traveling with Vice-President JD Vance to and from an event in Iowa.

CNN called a potential ban illegal and said it “stands fully behind our White House team and their fair and accurate reporting,” asserting a constitutional right to report without government interference. Politico said it will “continue to fairly report on this White House and future ones” and will defend its First Amendment rights. MS NOW declined to comment.

The White House Correspondents Association president Jacqui Heinrich said the organization stands in “defence” of colleagues singled out for doing their jobs and framed the issue as the public’s right to receive a full and independent account of the president’s activities, policies and decisions.

Multiple press freedom and legal advocacy groups criticized the announced ban. The Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University said courts have ruled on this point and called the press pool a public forum under the First Amendment. The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press described such a ban as “flatly unconstitutional,” and the Freedom of the Press Foundation also labeled it illegal.

The announcement follows other moves by the administration affecting press access, including control of the press pool and restrictions on Associated Press reporters from certain limited-access spaces, which prompted an AP lawsuit that remains ongoing.
