TRT Former Announcer Sırrı Er: “The Price of Silence is Heavy!”

I do not understand those who act as if lawlessness is being experienced for the first time. Moreover, I watch with astonishment as those who applauded what happened yesterday now engage in narratives of victimhood.

A person should have at least some sense of shame…

Some honor, some conscience, some principles, some intellectual integrity.

In this country, the Military Academies and the Gülhane Military Medical Academy were shut down overnight. The operations of 15 foundation universities were terminated.

The diplomas of many graduates from the closed universities were effectively rendered invalid in both the public and private sectors. Sixty-five thousand students were left without schools, while more than 2,800 academics and hundreds of thousands of people were dismissed from their jobs without due process.

People lost their freedom, their families, and their lives.

Some remained silent…
Some applauded…
Others watched what was happening, saying, “As long as it doesn’t affect me, let it be.”

Those who did not remember the law back then are now seeking justice. Those who disregarded the presumption of innocence then are now demanding the rule of law for themselves. Those who once said, “The state must know what it is doing,” are now shocked when the same practices affect them.

Justice is not a mechanism that operates according to the person involved. Law and democracy are not concepts to be defended only on the days when you prevail.

A society distracted one day by absolute nullity, the next by chicken meat, and then by trusteeship appointments still seems unable to recognize that its real loss has been its rights and freedoms. In fact, it does not appear likely to realize this anytime soon.

Yesterday, you remained silent while someone else’s rights were being violated; today, you are surprised when it is your turn.

The price of silence is heavy.
