Former Nanjing official sentenced to death over 2.2bn yuan bribery

Yang Youlin, a former city official in Nanjing, was sentenced to death by a Changzhou court on Monday after being found guilty of taking more than 2.2bn yuan in bribes, the court said.

The ruling covers offences committed between 1993 and 2023 while Yang served in various positions in Nanjing, and includes convictions for embezzlement, abuse of power and money laundering, according to state media.

Prosecutors said Yang used his roles to help others obtain engineering contracts, land transfers and financing, receiving money and valuables in return. The court described his actions as “of an extremely serious nature” that caused “exceptionally heavy losses to the interests of the state and the people.”

The sentencing forms part of President Xi Jinping’s long-running anti-corruption campaign, which has targeted officials across sectors including the military and banking, the reports noted.

Chinese courts rarely hand down death sentences for white-collar crimes, but they do so in cases involving very large sums. The court referenced precedents such as Lai Xiaomin, who was executed in 2021 for 1.8bn yuan in bribes, and Li Jianping, executed in 2024 for more than 3bn yuan in embezzlement and bribery.

Yang pleaded guilty and expressed remorse in his final statement, the state media said. Although he cooperated with investigators, the Changzhou court found his assistance insufficient to merit a more lenient punishment given the gravity of his offences.

The case record preserves the location, institutions and timeframe: Nanjing city roles held from 1993 to 2023, the Changzhou court’s decision announced on Monday, and the official total of more than 2.2bn yuan in illicit gains.
