Mississippi family demands answers after 18-year-old Nolan Wells found dead off Horn Island; investigation ongoing into circumstances.
The body of 18-year-old Nolan Wells was recovered off Horn Island on 6 July after he failed to return from a boating trip on 4 July, Jackson County officials said, and his family has hired civil rights lawyer Ben Crump while calling for further information and an independent autopsy.
Wells did not return with friends from the Horn Island excursion on 4 July, and local authorities located his body in the water two days later, Jackson County coroner Bruce Lynd said, confirming identity with dental records.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said no foul play was suspected but asked the public to contact the department if anyone was on or near Horn Island on 4 July, and requested original, unedited photos or videos related to alleged altercations or images of Wells.
Wells’s mother, Christine Wonsley, first reported him missing after he did not return the evening of 4 July, and the search that led to the discovery involved multiple local, state and federal agencies, authorities said.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, retained by the family, said witness statements conflict and he has ordered an independent autopsy; an initial autopsy was performed but its results have not been released.
Crump expressed that the family has serious, unanswered questions about how Wells came to be alone on the island and about the circumstances of his death, and he noted concerns regarding whether state investigation is sufficient given potential questions about other students’ involvement.
Christine and Elmore Wonsley told CBS Mornings they do not believe Nolan would have stayed behind on the island by choice, with his father saying that behavior was out of character.
The National Park Service describes Horn Island as having no staff, drinking water, shelter, facilities or communication, details that underscore the hazardous conditions of the location where Wells was found.
