The Isle of Man’s main ferry remains in drydock for extended essential repairs

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company announced that the main ferry Manxman will stay in drydock longer than planned for further necessary repairs, a move the operator said is needed to ensure safety and operational reliability. Ben-my-Chree has taken over services on the Douglas–Heysham route, while backup freight vessel MV Arrow is returning to support freight operations.

The Manxman entered drydock last week for scheduled maintenance but required additional works and a revised return-to-service date has not yet been confirmed. The operator said it is reviewing operational plans to minimise disruption to passengers.

Ben-my-Chree had been due to become the sole vessel on the Larne route from Friday, but that sailing will instead be carried out by the fast craft Manannan. Ben-my-Chree is currently operating between Douglas and Heysham.

The Steam Packet also reported that the backup passenger vessel experienced technical issues in recent days, causing cancellations on the Heysham route on Sunday and Tuesday. Managing director Brian Thomson acknowledged passenger frustration and said completing the additional works now will support reliable service in the years ahead.

Liberal News Analysis: What Does This Development Mean?

Manxman’s extended drydock has led to the redeployment of Ben-my-Chree on the Douglas–Heysham route and the reassignment of the Larne sailing to Manannan. MV Arrow is being readied to return for freight duties. The operator emphasised safety and long-term reliability as the reasons for delaying the vessel’s return.
