Tragic Sifnos helicopter crash kills honeymooning British couple and Greek pilot; investigation launched into cause and safety measures.
A private helicopter carrying a newlywed British couple and its Greek pilot crashed just metres from a landing pad on the Greek island of Sifnos on Monday, killing all three on board, local media and emergency services reported.
Kathimerini reported the couple had flown from Markopoulo near Athens to Sifnos. The fire service confirmed three bodies were recovered from the scene on Monday afternoon but did not identify the victims.
Emergency personnel and local residents worked at the site to extinguish flames after the aircraft went down. Sifnos’ deputy mayor, who arrived shortly after the incident, said there was almost “nothing left” of the helicopter and that two victims were found in the wreckage while the third was located a short distance away.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash. The BBC said it had contacted the UK Foreign Office, the Greek authorities and the aviation company for comment.
The reports indicate a private helicopter accident resulting in three fatalities near a Sifnos landing pad. Official confirmation of identities was not provided by the fire service, and an inquiry into the cause is under way. Local officials and emergency crews were involved in recovery and firefighting efforts at the scene.
