In the 2024 report of Freedom House, a think tank that evaluates the principles of “democracy, human rights, and the rule of law,” Türkiye is listed alongside Cambodia, Guatemala, Poland, and Zimbabwe among countries where the ruling power seeks to control electoral competition and restrict the opposition.

It was stated that the 2023 elections did not take place under equal competitive conditions.

Long-standing pressures on the opposition, lawsuits against journalists, media control, and the use of state resources in favor of the ruling party were listed as factors undermining democracy.

Only 20% of the world’s population lives in free countries. 42% live in partly free countries, while 38% live in not free countries.

While Finland scores 100 out of 100, Sweden 99, and Norway 98; Türkiye is ranked in the “not free” category with a score of 33.

The issue is not about liking or disliking, or being in agreement or disagreement. The issue is to question why the country has reached this point in terms of justice, law, freedom of expression, and fair political competition.

Democracy means equal conditions for everyone to compete, to criticize, to speak, and to engage in politics without fear.

In conclusion;

The real issue that needs to be addressed is not the superficial or sensational aspect, but building a society that questions and thinks in the best interests of the country.
