Flash flood devastates Nepal-Tibet border, over 1,100 dead and thousands missing

A catastrophic flash flood struck a Himalayan valley along the Nepal-Tibet border last Wednesday, killing at least 1,114 people in Nepal and leaving nearly 4,000 others missing, Nepal’s disaster agency said, while Chinese state media reported 16 deaths and more than 500 unaccounted for on the Tibetan side.

Rescuers have reached and cleared the route to the Gyirong border crossing with heavy machinery, enabling intensified search efforts, and drones are being used to scan remote areas, Chinese state media reported. Experts from China and India are assisting to build temporary bridges to improve access to affected communities.

In Nepal, nearly 12,000 people have been rescued but about 3,500 remain homeless and sheltered in 27 sites, mostly schools, across Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts, disrupting education. Authorities are focused on rescuing workers believed trapped in hydroelectric tunnels and on providing medical treatment and psychological counselling, Nepal’s prime minister Balendra Shah said.

The UN humanitarian agency said the response has entered a new phase, with relief and recovery operations intensified. The agency highlighted that destroyed infrastructure—more than 40 bridges lost—and damaged health facilities and contaminated water hinder access and increase disease risk amid the monsoon season.
