The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said a 17-year-old British boy fell from a hotel balcony in the Athens suburb of Chalandri at 05:00 local time (03:00 BST) on 3 July and was taken to the Red Cross Hospital in Athens in critical condition, later dying.

Greek media reported the fall occurred in the early hours of 3 July. Police launched an investigation into the incident, which remains ongoing, the FCDO statement said.

In a statement issued through the FCDO on Friday, the boy’s parents described their son as “a deeply loved son, an exceptional guitarist and a friend to so many.” They expressed their shock and heartbreak at his sudden loss.

The parents said their son brought joy and laughter to those around him and that “there is a space in this world that was uniquely his, one that can never be filled by anyone else.”

They thanked everyone who offered support during what they described as an “incredibly difficult time” and urged fellow travellers to obtain a Global Health Insurance Card to ease access to state health care in participating countries.

The teenager has not been named by authorities or in media reports. The police inquiry into the circumstances of the fall is continuing.
