Lincolnshire councillors seek funding to widen A15 and finish Spalding relief road

Councillors in Lincolnshire asked the Greater Lincolnshire mayor for a share of a £152m government transport grant to widen a stretch of the A15 and to help complete the unfinished Spalding Western Relief Road, the authority reported.

Under the proposals, £7.5m would be allocated to widen the A15 between Caenby Corner and County Boundary Road, with a separate request of £41.3m toward the estimated £69m cost of completing the 4-mile Spalding Western Relief Road, of which only the first of three sections has been built.

Councillor Christopher Reeve said the A15 is outdated for current vehicle sizes and needs extra funding. The first section of the Spalding relief road, including a bridge over a railway, was finished in October 2024 but currently ends in a field.

Other bids include £1.2m for improvements at the A15 Riseholme Lane junction, £4.5m to upgrade the A16 Crowland roundabout and nearly £2m for a cycle and pedestrian path between Sleaford and Ruskington.

Councillor James Bean highlighted the Caistor Top junction as an accident blackspot and urged spending there. Sam Edwards, head of highways and economic infrastructure at the county council, said a study has been commissioned to examine options including whether a roundabout or traffic lights are required.
