What happened, where, who said it, when and main result: A shelter-in-place order was issued inside Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium because of severe weather and reports of lightning before the World Cup last-16 match between Mexico and England, BBC Sport senior journalist Jack Skelton reported on Sunday; the immediate effect is that supporters and media were advised to remain in their seats while the scheduled 18:00 local time kick-off faces potential delay.

Organisers reported heavy rain over Mexico City during the day and alerts on big screens inside the Azteca warned that an electrical storm was approaching, prompting the instruction for people to stay in place rather than enter or move around the stadium.

Fifa held discussions with the English and Mexican football associations after proposing a kick-off shift to 19:00 BST on Sunday (12:00 local time), but the proposal was withdrawn and the match remains set to start at the original time; sources told BBC Sport the initial rescheduling proposal caused objections from both associations.

The arrivals of both teams were delayed and it was unclear when they would be permitted to enter the stadium; any lightning detected near the ground close to kick-off would require the match to be postponed until conditions are deemed safe.

Fifa must follow local authority guidance on severe-weather delays and has no autonomous rule-making power in this area; the same eight-mile lightning safety criterion used by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) applies in Mexico, meaning play cannot resume until 30 minutes have passed since the last detected strike within that radius.

Under that safety protocol, players must leave the pitch and fans must seek shelter away from their seats while a mandatory 30-minute countdown runs; the countdown resets each time lightning is detected within the specified distance and only after a full uninterrupted 30 minutes can supporters return and players warm up.

The match will be broadcast live on BBC TV, BBC iPlayer, BBC Radio 5 Live and the BBC Sport website and app; broadcasters and officials continue to monitor the situation as showers and thunderclouds develop around Mexico City.

BBC Meteorologist Tomasz Schafernaker noted that thunderstorms and shower clouds had developed around the city in recent hours, with downpours reported on social media, and warned that any storms were likely to linger for hours, increasing the risk of disruption to the fixture.

Officials emphasized that the safety of players and supporters takes priority and that any lightning strike inside the eight-mile radius would trigger the stoppage and countdown protocol, with further delays possible if strikes continue to occur.
