Mercedes boss says FIA decision upheld regulations after Silverstone safety-car confusion

What happened, where, who said it, when and the main outcome: At Silverstone on Sunday, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said the FIA’s decision to keep the safety car deployed at the end of a chaotic British Grand Prix followed the rules and preserved sporting integrity; the late software-driven timing-screen messages briefly suggested a restart before being corrected, and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took the win.

The race’s concluding confusion began when timing screens first indicated the safety car would pull in, then shortly after displayed that it would remain out. The FIA attributed the initial instruction to a software glitch that was later corrected, and Wolff welcomed the adherence to regulations.

The safety car period followed a high-speed crash by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen with four laps remaining. Before that incident, Ferrari’s Leclerc led the race after delaying his pit stop, while Mercedes’ championship leader Kimi Antonelli was closing rapidly.

Antonelli suffered steering issues late in the race and made two quick pit stops. Mercedes removed a loose wheel shield but the car continued to handle poorly; Antonelli finished outside the points and later received a penalty for track limits.

The sequence of events rearranged the podium to Leclerc, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton. Russell’s decision to remain on track during the safety car proved the correct gamble when the race did not restart.

The result cut Antonelli’s championship lead over Russell from 43 points to 25, with Hamilton a further seven points behind. Russell acknowledged Antonelli’s season-to-date superiority while stressing the need for improved performance to contend for the title.

Wolff said the timing-screen error was understandable under pressure and had been rectified. He contrasted the Silverstone handling with the 2021 Abu Dhabi race, where race-direction mistakes cost Hamilton the title, and added that it was better the rules were applied correctly this time.

Ferrari described the weekend as a positive surprise. Leclerc and team principal Frederic Vasseur cautioned against reading too much into a single result, while noting that a recent engine upgrade and strong cornering pace had improved competitiveness.

Antonelli, despite losing points, emphasized the weekend showed the car’s and his own speed, saying the setback increased his motivation to perform better in upcoming races.
