Two girls were seriously injured at Welfen-Gymnasium secondary school in Schongau, Upper Bavaria, police said, and a 16-year-old suspect has been arrested; the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, authorities added.

Police and emergency services carried out a large operation at the school after the incident, the force said. A police spokeswoman told AFP that it was unclear what weapon was used and that they currently believe the suspect acted alone.

The number of other people reportedly involved and the severity of their injuries are still being clarified by investigators, the spokeswoman said. The ages of the injured girls and the identity of the 16-year-old have not been released.

Authorities described the case as a “rampage,” according to the police spokeswoman. It is not yet known whether the teenage suspect has any connection to the school.

A contact point for relatives and parents of students has been established at the town fire station to provide information and support, the police added.

Welfen-Gymnasium, founded in 1887, was initially almost exclusively a girls’ school and has been coeducational for the last 40 years, according to the school’s website.
