At Least 11 Killed in Suicide Bomb Attack in Northwestern Pakistan

At least 11 people have been killed and around 30 others injured in a suicide bombing in northwestern Pakistan, according to police and rescue officials.

The attacker reportedly detonated a vehicle packed with explosives at a roadside police checkpoint.

Bilal Faizi, a spokesperson for the provincial emergency service, said the explosion occurred in Dera Ismail Khan district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as the Pakistani Taliban, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Pakistan has experienced an increase in militant attacks in recent years, with the TTP claiming responsibility for many of them.

The Counter Extremism Project (CEP) describes the TTP as a “conglomerate” of about 40 tribal and non-tribal militant groups primarily fighting the Pakistani state.

The organisation was founded in late 2007 and is allied with the Afghan Taliban, which returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021 after overthrowing the US-backed government in Kabul.

According to the CEP, TTP militants regularly carry out attacks against security forces, civilians and political figures in both Pakistan and Afghanistan.
