What happened: Rescuers in Kyiv are searching for people trapped under rubble after Russian ballistic missiles struck the city in a second round of attacks, killing at least nine people and injuring 46, officials said.

Where and when: The strikes occurred across Kyiv on the eve of the NATO summit in Turkey, according to statements from city and national officials.

Who spoke: Kyiv’s head military administrator Timur Tkachenko and Mayor Vitali Klitschko provided official figures and accounts of the damage.

Main outcome: Multiple residential buildings and infrastructure were hit, fires broke out in apartment complexes, and emergency teams continue to search wreckage for survivors.

Following the strikes, images from Kyiv showed smouldering debris and burned vehicles, while crews combed damaged sites early on Monday to find survivors.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported damage to warehouses and a garage workshop in addition to residential blocks. Emergency services have been engaged in rescue and firefighting operations at several locations.

President Volodymyr Zelensky warned hours before the attack that Moscow was preparing a second “massive strike” on Kyiv after earlier assaults that left dozens dead.

The strikes come after a previous wave of drone and missile attacks through Thursday night that Kyiv says killed 30 people and prompted tens of thousands to shelter in metro stations as air-raid alarms sounded.

Ukraine has accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilian areas. Russia, for its part, said it struck military and energy sites in retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian power infrastructure, and reported temporary power cuts in Sevastopol in Russian-occupied Crimea.

Zelensky urged allies ahead of the NATO summit not to delay supplying long-range missiles for Ukraine’s air defenses and also requested US licences to produce Patriot defence missiles domestically.

Officials continue to provide updates on casualties and recovery efforts as search operations proceed amid concerns over further strikes.
