Trump reportedly offered to sell arms to China amid Taiwan weapons dispute

US President Donald Trump offered China the possibility of purchasing American weapons during discussions over Washington’s arms sales to Taiwan, according to US Ambassador to China David Perdue.

Speaking in an interview with Fox News that aired on Sunday, Perdue said the issue of US arms sales to Taiwan was raised again during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the United States last week.

“President Trump continues to say, ‘Hey, we sell arms to other people around the world.’ He actually asked President Xi would he like to buy some at one point,” Perdue said.

Perdue added that Trump and Xi continue to discuss potential arms sales whenever they meet, while stressing that the US position on the issue has not changed.

China considers Taiwan part of its territory, while US weapons sales to the self-ruled island have remained a longstanding source of tension between Washington and Beijing.

Under the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act, the United States is required by law to provide Taiwan with weapons for its defence. Taiwan has a democratically elected president and legislature.

The United States approved an $11.1 billion (€9.7 billion) arms package for Taiwan in December. Perdue said the deal represented more arms for Taiwan than any US president had approved since 1979.

During his Washington visit, Xi again urged Trump to exercise “prudence” over Taiwan and called on the United States to explicitly oppose Taiwan independence.

China had warned Taiwan in June that pursuing independence “by relying on the United States or through military means is a dead end.”

In May, Trump suggested that an upcoming arms package for Taipei could be used as a negotiating chip with China, prompting concerns that Taiwan’s security could become part of broader US-China negotiations.
