JUSTICE MUST NOT SURRENDER TO INJUSTICE DISGUISED AS RIGHTEOUSNESS!

Justice is not merely refusing to let others do to us what we would not want done to ourselves; it is the ability to protect another person’s rights even when doing so offers us no benefit whatsoever.

This is where the real test begins. When individuals regard the rights of others as being just as valuable as their own; when society recognizes the dignity of those who are different from itself; when the state limits its power through the rule of law…

Only then does justice cease to be a mere slogan and become the foundation of our shared life.

“The right not to be stigmatized, the presumption of innocence, and human dignity…”

Immediately following these statements, those who merely appear to stand for justice ask:

“Do you show the same sensitivity toward those who do not belong to your side? For example, engineers who spent 18 months in detention without any evidence, an İBB employee detained over a project in which they had no involvement, or a Boğaziçi University student who participated in a protest…”

Justice refuses to come to this land because it is not what you imagine it to be. Yet confining justice within the narrow limits of your own thinking is compatible with neither reason nor the law.

As if everything had been perfect until just yesterday…

As if justice had been functioning flawlessly, the law had been protecting everyone equally, and democracy had been prevailing through all its institutions!

They tell the story as though nobody had ever suffered injustice or lawlessness; as though nobody had lost their job, their spouse, their freedom, or even their life…

As though the principle of individual criminal responsibility had never been disregarded, destroying the lives of millions…

As though ten years had not passed, and none of these things had ever happened…

Can memory really be erased so easily? Can the conscience remain silent so effortlessly?

Hundreds of thousands of people who lost their jobs and their lives as they knew them without being given a fair hearing…

The most dangerous form of oppression is the kind that speaks the language of justice. For when injustice disguises itself as righteousness, it takes captive not only its victims but also the conscience of society.

This is precisely why the country cannot return to normal!

Because you chose to say, “As long as the snake does not bite me, let it live a thousand years.”

If people had objected to the injustices committed in the past, if they had upheld the rule of law and said, “Stop this, gentlemen!” believe me, none of what we are experiencing today would have come to pass.

Remember: an injustice inflicted upon someone else in one era lays the groundwork for a precedent of lawlessness that may come knocking on everyone’s door in another.

Justice is not something to be bent and twisted to suit one’s wishes.

As long as this unhealthy mindset and attitude persist, it will be impossible to break out of this vicious cycle.

What a tragedy!
