Can Ataklı Raises New Political Allegations Ahead of Judicial Recess

Turkish journalist Can Ataklı has made a series of controversial claims concerning possible legal proceedings involving senior figures from Türkiye’s main opposition party.

According to Ataklı, political circles are discussing the possibility that CHP Chairman Özgür Özel’s parliamentary immunity could be lifted before the end of July. He further alleged that between seven and eight CHP lawmakers could face detention during the same period.

Ataklı argued that the coming days, particularly the period between July 9 and the start of the judicial recess, could prove decisive, suggesting that judicial processes may move rapidly before the courts enter their summer break.

He also criticized the opposition’s current political strategy, claiming that relying solely on constitutional and legal arguments would not be sufficient under the present circumstances.

As of publication, neither the CHP, the Turkish Parliament, the Ministry of Justice nor judicial authorities have issued any statement confirming or responding to these allegations.

“The information coming from political circles is astonishing. There is talk that Özgür Özel’s parliamentary immunity could be lifted before the end of July, and that seven or eight MPs may be detained.

The opposition is still trying to conduct politics by referring only to the Constitution, laws and legal provisions.

When facing a power that can bend the law to its own will, those old strategies cannot produce results.

The period between July 9 and the beginning of the judicial recess is critical. A great deal could happen very quickly through the judicial system. I sincerely hope these reports prove to be wrong, but the risks are serious.”
