A Delta flight struck by fireworks while landing at Midway

Delta Air Lines flight 1076 from Atlanta to Chicago was hit by a firework during its descent to Midway International Airport on Saturday night, the airline said, and the aircraft landed safely with no injuries.

The Airbus A319 departed Hartsfield-Jackson Airport at 19:51 EDT and touched down at Midway at 20:33 CDT, according to the airline’s statement. Airline and air traffic recordings indicate the pilot reported the impact occurred at about 200 feet during the approach.

Air traffic control warned the crew beforehand about fireworks near the approach path, saying multiple homes near the runway end were discharging pyrotechnics. A pilot on the recording described a loud bang and said they hoped the device was a mortar that detonated beneath the aircraft.

The Federal Aviation Administration noted the incident occurred around 20:30 CDT and said it had been notified, according to media partners. After landing, the aircraft was inspected and Delta reported no damage and no injuries among the 52 passengers and six crew members on board.

The event coincided with nationwide fireworks displays marking the United States’ 250th anniversary. Large public shows were held by state and local authorities, while private, unsupervised fireworks were also widespread.

In Washington, DC, the National Park Service staged a 40-minute fireworks program at the National Mall, and flights at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport were suspended from noon to accommodate military flyovers and the midnight pyrotechnic display.
